This guide is the plan for your first seven days. The World of Sea Battle hub covers the basics in brief; here we go deeper, and we correct a few things that older guides still repeat. Since B21 the shipyard works differently, so any guide written before 15 October 2026 that tells you an exact ship order is at least partly out of date.
What kind of game you are starting

Steam Trailer: World of Sea Battle (official channel)World of Sea Battle (WOSB) is an open world sailing MMO from Thera Interactive. You command one ship directly while the rest of your squadron follows. There are no classes: you trade, hunt NPCs, fight players, build ships and run a personal island, and you can switch between all of it on the same character. Everything on the market is made by players, so prices move with supply, demand and wars.
Three things make it different from arcade naval games:
- Losses are real. If you sink, you lose part of your cargo and your ship loses integrity. Integrity has to be repaired with time and gold.
- Wind matters. Sailing straight into the wind is slow. B21 reworked the wind rose so the broad reach (wind from behind at an angle) is now the fastest and widest favourable zone.
- The economy is the progression. Better ships come from materials, and materials come from mines, trading, dismantling and crafting.
The developers announced on 22 October 2026 that updates now ship every 1.5 months and that the big Endless Sea expansion moved to spring 2027. Expect numbers to keep shifting.
Day 1 and 2: quests, skills and your first gold

- Do the tutorial quest chain. It gives you your first small ship and walks you through sailing, firing and docking. Do not skip it; the game explains little elsewhere.
- Take tavern quests in every port you visit. Quests come in three categories, and the Gold ones are harder but pay best. Since B17 you no longer need rum to take a quest.
- Spend your first skill points on movement. Community guides agree on Fast Travel first (it moves you between neighbouring ports without sailing) and Escort second. Logistics, which adds another fast travel use, can wait.
- Sink small NPC merchants. Inspect an NPC before you fight it to see its cargo. Merchants with gold or materials in the hold are your early income.
- Keep everything you loot that is not junk. Wood, iron, resin and fabric all feed shipbuilding later.

Flags: the setting that decides who can attack you

The flag you fly is the single most important safety choice. The rules changed several times in 2025 and 2026, so here is the current picture from the official patch notes:
| Flag | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Peace flag | Protection from player attacks in normal waters. Faction players get 20 percent less XP and loot, it is not allowed in the danger zone and mooring fees are higher. Since B19 it no longer protects military or trade faction players in enemy port waters. | Hauling cargo, learning the game |
| Faction flag | Bonus to XP and loot (30 percent for the combat faction flag since B19), but other players can engage you. | You are hunting NPCs and can fight back |
| Black flag | Pirate flag for players without a guild. Attack anyone, be attacked by anyone. | Only when you are ready for PvP |
| No flag | Hides your guild tag. Enemy towers open fire after about 40 seconds. | Rarely, for a quick pass |
Two rules catch new players. First, attacking someone gives you aggressor status for five minutes, and since B20 entering a port no longer clears it. Second, the central PvP circle opens from level 15, and inside it the peace flag does not save you. Stay out of it until you can afford to lose the ship you are sailing.
Day 3 and 4: pick a faction branch in the shipyard

B21 replaced the old class lines with three faction trees: Antilia, Español and Kai and Severia. Each faction has a main branch that runs to rank I and two side branches that end at ranks II and III. Ranks run from VII (smallest) to I (largest).
- Antilia ships are balanced. A safe first choice.
- Español ships have more durability, cargo hold and crew, paid for with other stats. Good for traders and boarders.
- Kai and Severia ships favour protection, speed and maneuverability.
Every branch you research adds a 7.5 percent bonus, and a branch is a horizontal row of ships of one faction and class. In practice: stay in one faction while you learn, and do not buy a ship two ranks above your skill and income. Our best ships guide lists what to aim for at each rank and role.
Build your ships at a port of the ship's own faction. The faction discount was cut from 25 to 20 percent in B19, but on a ship that eats hundreds of units of iron and wood, 20 percent is still the cheapest upgrade you will ever get.
Day 5 to 7: your personal island

The personal island unlocks at captain rank 9. It is where your mines deliver resources, where you craft heavy materials more cheaply and where your income stops depending on how many hours you sail. The short version:
- Place the first island close to where you play, with an iron and a wood mine nearby. Mines must be within roughly 7,000 distance of the island to be collected automatically.
- Build the Plate Workshop first. The first building costs only gold; everything after it needs plates.
- Craft heavy items on the island (beams, bulkheads, plates). The island workshop saves about 20 percent of the resources.
- Plan a second island later. Islands do not move; you build a new one and abandon the old mines.
The full setup, building order and mine choice are in our personal island guide.
What to buy first
| Priority | Buy or unlock | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fast Travel and Escort skills | Hours saved every week, and safer port entries |
| 2 | Full crew for your current ship | Boarding and reload depend on crew; an undercrewed ship loses fights it should win |
| 3 | Upgrades in your free slots | New ships start with a sail slot and two upgrade slots, two more unlock with ship experience |
| 4 | Next ship in the same faction branch | Keeps your research bonus growing |
| 5 | Personal island at rank 9 | Passive materials and the 20 percent workshop saving |
Upgrades and skills are explained in detail in our upgrades and skills guide.
The mistakes that cost new captains most

- Boarding too fast. At high speed the grappling hooks miss, and you wait for a cooldown while the enemy shoots your crew.
- Boarding without checking crew. The side with more boarding crew wins. Inspect the target first and thin its crew with grapeshot.
- Hitting yourself with your own barrels. Explosive barrels and mines do not care whose they are.
- Ramming the coast. Land damages your hull. Give rocks a wide berth, especially when the wind pushes you toward shore.
- Selling every small ship. Some areas and quests suit small hulls. Keep at least one cheap fast ship.
- Buying unresearched ships at auction. A ship you have not researched in the shipyard carries a stat penalty.
- Following pre-B21 ship orders. Several ships changed rank, class or faction in B21. Check the shipyard before you collect materials for a specific ship.
A simple weekly routine
Beginners Guide World of Sea Battle 2025 (Thexppkiller)Once the first week is behind you, a steady routine beats random sailing: collect from your mines and craft on the island, run tavern quests in the region where you have reputation, haul a cargo between ports where the exchange price gap is real, and spend the evening in whichever fight mode you enjoy. When you have the basics, move on to PvP combat or PvE farming, and check the map and ports guide before you sail into higher danger zones.
FAQ
What should I do first in World of Sea Battle?
Finish the tutorial quest chain, take tavern quests in each port, spend your first skill points on Fast Travel and Escort, and fly the peace flag until you can afford to lose your ship.
When do I get a personal island?
The personal island unlocks at captain rank 9. Place it near iron and wood mines and build the Plate Workshop first, because later buildings need plates.
Which faction should I choose in the shipyard?
Since update B21 the shipyard has three factions. Antilia is balanced and the easiest start, Español has more durability, hold and crew, and Kai and Severia favours protection, speed and maneuverability.
Is World of Sea Battle free to play?
Yes. It is free to play on Steam and has been in Early Access since 21 October 2025. A premium subscription called the Captain's Seal is optional.
Should I sell Battle Marks for gold?
No. Battle Marks buy unique ships and other endgame items, and earning them back takes a long time. Keep them, along with Voodoo Skulls and Escudos.
Is the peace flag completely safe?
No. It does not work in the danger zone or the central PvP circle, and since update B19 it no longer protects military or trade faction players in enemy port waters.
