Talents work only on the primary commander of a march, so read this together with the pairings guide. Which commanders deserve the investment is on the tier list, and the rest of the series is on the Rise of Kingdoms hub.
How talent trees work

Every commander has a talent tree with three branches, one per specialty. Since the Talent Tree 2.0 rework, the trees you will see include Infantry, Cavalry, Archer, Leadership, Integration, Peacekeeping, Gathering, Garrison, Defense, Attack, Support, Skill, Versatility, Mobility, Conquering and Engineering, plus the newer Smite and Combo trees that recent commanders carry. Commanders earn points as they level, up to 74 points at level 60.
- Each branch ends in a big keystone talent that defines the build. Reaching one costs most of a branch.
- 74 points fill roughly one and a half branches. You fully commit to one tree and take the best nodes of a second.
- Resetting costs gems or an item. One guide lists a Talent Reset item at 1,000 gems in the shop. Check the price in game before planning frequent resets.
Which tree to max for each role
| Role | Main tree | Second tree | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open field | Troop type tree (Infantry, Cavalry or Archer) | Versatility, Skill or Combo | Stats for your troop type plus sustained damage |
| Rally lead | Conquering | Troop type tree | Rally damage and capacity against cities and buildings |
| Garrison | Garrison | Defense | Bonuses only while defending structures |
| Barbarians | Peacekeeping | Support or Integration | Damage to barbarians and faster rage |
| Gathering | Gathering | Integration | Gathering speed and load |
| Skill damage | Skill | Versatility | Rage and skill damage for nukers |
This mapping follows the role advice in current AllClash, RiseofKingdomsGuides and LDShop build guides. Exact point by point builds differ between guides and change with patches, so we list the tree logic and only the specific talents that several guides agree on.
Two habits make talent planning easier. Read the commander's skills before you choose the second tree, because many talents boost a mechanic the skills use (rage, skill damage, combo attacks). And look at your secondary: if the secondary already brings healing or defense, the primary's points can go further into damage, and the other way round.
Open field cavalry build: Ivan IV

Ivan IV Pre-Launch Intel: Mechanics, Pairings, and More (official channel)Ivan IV is the cavalry open field commander of late 2026. His trees are Cavalry, Versatility and Combo. The usual approach: fill the Cavalry tree for stats, then spend the rest in Combo or Versatility depending on your secondary. AllClash's Ivan IV guide points out the main fork at the top: A Good Day to Die (more damage dealt, more damage taken) against Impenetrable (a defensive talent that kicks in when the march's health is low). Pick the first for short, aggressive fights where you choose targets, the second for long KvK field fights where you get focused.
Arthur Pendragon shares the same three specialties (Cavalry, Versatility, Combo), so the same logic applies to him.
Combo is the tree to watch on new cavalry commanders: Ivan IV, Arthur Pendragon and William Marshal all carry it, and Delta Formation, which update 1.1.13 changed, is also about combo attacks.
Rally build: William Marshal

William Marshal's trees are Cavalry, Conquering and Combo. For rallies you fill Conquering, because that tree carries rally damage and the bonuses against cities and buildings, and take Cavalry nodes with the rest. Subutai, also Cavalry, Conquering and Combo, is built the same way. For open field use with Marshal, swap to a Cavalry first build, which is why many players keep two talent setups.
Subutai and William Marshal both being Cavalry, Conquering and Combo commanders is not an accident: rally leads share a pattern. Once you understand one rally build, the next rally commander you get will look familiar, and you can plan the points before the commander even arrives.
Garrison build: archer and infantry defenders

Garrison commanders such as Choe Yeong (Archer, Garrison, Defense) and Gorgo (Infantry, Garrison, Defense) are built with the Garrison tree first, because its bonuses only work while defending a city or structure and are much stronger than generic stats. The remaining points go into Defense. For Yi Seong-Gye as a garrison, guides list the full Garrison tree. If you only defend occasionally, keep a field build as your main setup and switch before wars.
A garrison build also needs the right troops behind it. Garrison talents boost the troops inside the structure, so a city defended by a mix of troop types gets less from a commander built for one type. Keep the defending troop type in line with your garrison commander, and ask allies who reinforce you to send the same type.
Barbarian build: Lohar

Lohar (Integration, Peacekeeping, Support) is the barbarian specialist. RiseofKingdomsGuides' Lohar build fills Peacekeeping first with Quick Study, Trophy Hunter and Double-Edged Sword at 3 of 3, then takes Rejuvenate in Support at 3 of 3 for faster rage, and Curing Chant at 5 of 5 to keep the march healthy between fights. Lohar usually rides as a secondary, though, so these talents matter when he leads, for example on a farm account hitting barbarians.
Peacekeeping talents only work against barbarians and other neutral units, so a Lohar build is useless in PvP. That is fine: keep Lohar for barbarians, farms and events with barbarian stages, and never move him into a field march to save time.
Leveling and resetting without waste

- Level the primary to 60 before anything else. Talents are where the power is, and only the primary uses them.
- Plan the build before you level. Points spent early in the wrong tree cost a reset later.
- Keep one build per job. If a commander does both field and rally, switch builds before the job instead of compromising.
- Recheck after big patches. Talent trees have been reworked before, and keystone values change.
- Use XP books on one commander at a time. Barbarian XP comes for free; books are limited.
Want to see talents in action? The official intel videos go through commander mechanics and how their trees interact with their skills. For the season where all of this matters most, read the KvK guide.
Finally, write your builds down. A screenshot of each talent page before a reset saves you from rebuilding a setup from memory when you switch back.
Talent trees of key commanders
| Commander | Trees | Main use |
|---|---|---|
| Ivan IV | Cavalry, Versatility, Combo | Open field cavalry |
| Arthur Pendragon | Cavalry, Versatility, Combo | Open field cavalry |
| William Marshal | Cavalry, Conquering, Combo | Cavalry rally lead |
| Subutai | Cavalry, Conquering, Combo | Cavalry rally lead |
| Alexander Nevsky | Cavalry, Versatility, Skill | Cavalry field and rally |
| Zhuge Liang | Archer, Skill, Versatility | Archer skill damage |
| Hermann Prime | Archer, Versatility, Support | Archer field |
| Choe Yeong | Archer, Garrison, Defense | City garrison |
| Gorgo | Infantry, Garrison, Defense | Infantry garrison |
| Elizabeth I | Engineering, Versatility, Skill | Skill damage |
| Vercingetorix | Leadership, Versatility, Support | Buffer, secondary |
| Philip II | Leadership, Versatility, Support | Secondary |
| Lohar | Integration, Peacekeeping, Support | Barbarians |
| Cleopatra VII | Integration, Gathering, Support | Gathering |
| Constance | Integration, Gathering, Skill | Gathering |
Trees for William Marshal, Ivan IV, Elizabeth I and Vercingetorix are from the official Commander Community Intel videos; the others are from RiseofKingdomsGuides' commander list (July 2026) and its build pages. The pattern is clear: the first tree tells you the troop type or job, the last two tell you how the commander deals damage or helps.
Talent mistakes that waste points
- Building talents on a commander that will be a secondary. Its talents never apply.
- Taking a little of every tree. Without a keystone a build loses most of its value.
- Using a garrison build in open field. Garrison talents only work while defending.
- Ignoring the troop type. A Cavalry tree does nothing for an infantry march.
- Copying a build from an old patch. Since the Talent Tree 2.0 rework and the newer Smite and Combo trees, many older builds point at talents that changed.
FAQ
How many talent points does a commander get in Rise of Kingdoms?
A commander at level 60, the maximum level, has 74 talent points. That fills about one and a half of the three talent branches.
Do secondary commander talents apply?
No. Only the primary commander's talents apply to the march. Secondary commanders add their skills only.
Which talent tree is best for rallies?
Conquering. It carries rally damage and the bonuses against cities and structures. Fill it first on rally leads like William Marshal or Subutai.
How do you build Lohar talents?
Fill Peacekeeping first with Quick Study, Trophy Hunter and Double-Edged Sword, then Rejuvenate in Support and Curing Chant to keep the march healthy.
Can you reset talents in Rise of Kingdoms?
Yes, with a talent reset item or gems. Prices can change, so check the shop in game before planning a build you will reset often.
What are the Smite and Combo trees?
They are newer talent trees that recent commanders carry. Ivan IV, Arthur Pendragon and William Marshal all have the Combo tree.
