Rise of Kingdoms best commander pairings by stage

A commander alone is half a march. The pair decides which talents apply, which skills fire and how much the march can take. The right pair changes as your account grows, so this guide is sorted by stage first and role second.

If you have not chosen which commanders to invest in yet, read the tier list first. The basics of commanders are on the Rise of Kingdoms hub.

How primary and secondary commanders work

A march has a primary commander and an optional secondary commander. The primary decides the talent tree, because only the primary commander's talents apply. Both commanders bring their skills. In practice that gives you three rules:

  1. Primary: the commander with the right talent trees for the job (Cavalry plus Conquering for rallies, Garrison plus Defense for city defense, and so on).
  2. Secondary: the commander with the best skills for that troop type. A secondary's talents do nothing, so a high level gatherer or garrison commander can be a poor secondary.
  3. Same troop type. Many skills only work, or work best, in a march of one troop type. Yi Do and Ivan IV are built around pure infantry and pure cavalry marches.

When you swap a pair around, check the talents. A pair that is great one way round can be mediocre the other.

Two more points decide whether a pair works in practice. First, skill levels: a secondary with its first skill maxed and the rest at level 1 adds little, so finish the secondary's key skill before you judge the pair. Second, equipment and formation: equipment adds stats to the primary's troop type, and formations such as Delta Formation, changed in update 1.1.13, add their own bonuses. A strong pair with no equipment can lose to a weaker pair in full gear.

Mid game pairs (first KvK seasons)

In the first Lost Kingdom seasons you face older accounts with legendary pairs. These are pairs guides recommend once you have a few legendary commanders:

  • Infantry: Bai Qi with Liu Che, or Liu Che with Philip II.
  • Archer: Qin Shi Huang with Yi Seong-Gye if Yi Seong-Gye is already built, Alp Arslan with Zhuge Liang.
  • Cavalry: Minamoto, Saladin or Cao Cao based pairs are fine until you reach the newer cavalry commanders.
  • New kingdom picks: RiseofKingdomsGuides still rates Yi Seong-Gye S+ in every category for new kingdoms, with Richard, El Cid, Saladin, Minamoto and Frederick at S.

Yi Seong-Gye stays useful at every stage, which makes him one of the safest legendary investments.

The jump from early to mid game is where many free players stall. They keep upgrading epic pairs that are already maxed instead of saving universal sculptures for one legendary. Once Sun Tzu and Joan of Arc are done, every universal sculpture should go into the legendary that fits your troop type, even if that commander is weak until it gets a few skills.

Late game open field pairs (current meta)

The scores come from AllClash's pairings page dated 25 October 2026 and are their own rating out of 100. Vercingetorix is a buffer (Leadership, Versatility, Support on his official intel card), so he works as a secondary that lifts the primary rather than as a damage dealer.

Kingdoms in early seasons rarely have access to all of these commanders, since several come from the Season of Conquest tavern or recent events. If you cannot get the top pair, take the best pair of the same troop type from the tier list and follow the same primary and secondary logic. The logic stays valid even as the names change every few months.

Rally leads need the Conquering tree on the primary. Garrison leads need Garrison and Defense. The talent builds page explains both.

For garrisons, remember that the strongest garrison commander in the city leads the defense, including reinforcements from allies. Agree inside the alliance who keeps a garrison pair ready, so a big target always has a proper defender instead of a field pair with the wrong talents.

Gathering and barbarian pairs

A Chinese commander in armour next to a glowing golden commander slot with a plus sign and the text Reset a Commander
Official App Store art for commander resets, which return sculptures. Useful if you built a gatherer too far and want the sculptures back.
  • Gem deposits and alliance deposits: Constance, with Sarka or Joan of Arc.
  • Food: Gaius Marius or Ishida Mitsunari.
  • Stone: Cleopatra VII.
  • Gold: Seondeok.
  • Any resource: Sarka.
  • Barbarians: Aethelflaed or Boudica with Lohar as secondary.

Gathering pairs only need the Gathering tree on the primary. Gathering commanders are covered in more depth in the farming guide.

Gathering pairs are where elite commanders shine. Constance and Sarka are cheap to max, and a maxed elite gatherer brings home more than a half built legendary gatherer.

Common pairing mistakes

A desert city under siege with red and blue armies and fireballs hitting the walls
Google Play store art of a city under siege. The wrong garrison pair is often the reason a city burns.
Do not judge a pair by its power numberCommander power rises with level and stars, not with how well two kits fit together. Test a pair in Sunset Canyon or on barbarian forts before you pour sculptures into it.
  • Mixing troop types in a march led by a single type commander.
  • Putting the better talent commander second. Its talents are wasted.
  • Using a rally commander in open field without changing talents.
  • Splitting sculptures across several half built legendaries. Finish one pair first.

If you only remember one rule from this page: decide the job first, then the primary by its talent trees, then the secondary by its skills.

How to test a pair before investing

A Spartan warrior and a map full of marching armies with the slogan Hundreds of Troops on Screen
Official App Store art. Test pairs where losses do not hurt before you take them into a real fight like this.

The cheapest test ground is Sunset Canyon: troops there are equal tier 3 for everyone and you get five free attempts a day, so the difference you see comes from commanders, skills and talents, not from troop counts. Try the pair both ways round, with the primary and secondary swapped, and watch which one fires its active skill more often.

The second test is barbarian forts with your alliance. A pair that clears forts without heavy losses has enough sustain for open field. A pair that dies fast there will die faster in KvK.

  1. Test in Sunset Canyon against several opponents, not one.
  2. Test both orders of the pair.
  3. Check the battle report: skill damage, healing and how long the march lasted.
  4. Only then spend universal sculptures.

Swaps and resets: fixing a wrong investment

Older guides tell you a wrong commander choice is permanent. That is no longer true. Lilith's own store art advertises commander swaps ("Catch up on 1 year in 1 day", "New commanders, instant impact") and commander resets that give sculptures back. Swaps move levels and investment from one commander to another; resets return the sculptures from a commander you no longer use. Conditions and costs change with events, so read the swap or reset screen in game before you rely on it. The point for pairing decisions: building a pair that is good today is no longer a dead end once the meta moves.

FAQ

Do secondary commander talents work in Rise of Kingdoms?

No. Only the primary commander's talents apply to a march. The secondary contributes its skills, so choose secondaries for skills.

What is the best free to play pairing?

Bjorn Ironside or Aethelflaed with Sun Tzu for infantry, and Pelagius with Baibars or Belisarius for cavalry. All are cheap to max.

What is the best cavalry pair in late 2026?

AllClash's October 2026 scores put Ivan IV with Achilles first and Arthur Pendragon with Ivan IV second among cavalry pairs.

What is the best infantry pair right now?

Sun Tzu Prime with Yi Do scores highest on AllClash's October 2026 list, followed by Yi Do with Liu Che.

Who should I pair with Lohar?

Lohar works as the secondary for barbarian hunting. Aethelflaed and Boudica are the usual primaries.

What is the best rally pair?

William Marshal with Subutai is the most cited cavalry rally pair in 2026. Some guides prefer Ivan IV as Marshal's secondary.
