Best heroes and team compositions for beginners in Hero Wars

Your first team decides how fast you clear the campaign and the Tower. Build it around one damage type, free heroes and a clear role for every slot.

The five slots

A Hero Wars team has five heroes in a line. The front slot is your tank. Behind it stand your damage dealers, and at the back your support or healer. Position matters: heroes in front take the hits, heroes at the back are safe from most attacks but are the first target of assassins.

Pick a damage type

Physical heroes scale with attack and armor penetration; magic heroes with magic attack and magic penetration. Gear and glyphs are different for each. A mixed team wastes resources, so choose one and stay with it until your core is strong. Magic teams have become the stronger first choice in 2026 because several physical counters have fallen out of the meta.

Hero Wars tanks
Every team starts with its tank. Pick one you can farm.

Three starter templates

TemplateSlotsWhy it works
Magic coreTank, two mages, control, healerBurst damage that ignores armor, with a healer to survive the opening
Physical coreTank, warrior, marksman, support, healerSteady damage with buffs; forgiving in the campaign
SustainTwo tanks, mage, support, healerFor the Tower and Outland bosses where survival matters more than speed

Which heroes

Use heroes you can farm in the campaign or buy in shops. Campaign heroes level fast because their soul stones drop daily. Event and crossover heroes are stronger on paper but starve without a steady source of stones. The hero roster shows roles for every hero.

Growing into a second team

Once your five are at the level cap for your team level and wearing full gear, start a second team for Grand Arena. Reuse the same damage type so your glyph and gear investments carry over, and give the second team a different tank and healer so it can fight on its own.

Common questions about teams

Do you need two tanks? Only for sustain fights. Do you need a healer? Almost always, for anything longer than an Arena fight. Can you mix in one hero of the other damage type? Yes, if that hero is a support or control hero whose job is not damage.
